The Broome County Opioid Awareness Council is announcing another round of min-grants for drug overdose prevention efforts in the county.

Officials say a total of $40,000 is available, up from $25,000 that had been available in previous years.

Non-profit organizations, community agencies, schools and municipalities can apply for funding for activities that address work with recovery peers, harm reduction education and increased access to Narcan and education around substance abuse disorders.

Grants will be awarded at the end of August.

There will be four awards of up to $10,000 each.

County officials say they are looking forward to building on program ideas that have been presented in the past now that additional funding has been made available for the mini-grant round.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said in a news release announcing the opening of the grant application round: “I am excited for the additional amount of funding available this year to help combat the opioid epidemic in Broome County. Thank you to the many community agencies who work to save lives in our area and finding new ways to reach people due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” . “I look forward to seeing new initiatives funded this year.
