Body Found Near Binghamton’s Rockbottom Dam
Binghamton police are investigating a person's death after a body was discovered near the Rockbottom Dam.
City police detective Captain Cory Minor on Monday confirmed that a body was found in the area of the dam over the weekend. He said the discovery was reported Saturday evening.
Minor declined to provide further information about the case, including how police were notified. Although the death is under investigation, he said there was no immediate indication of foul play. Minor would not say whether police have positively identified the body or whether the person had been reported missing.
The Rockbottom Dam is in the Susquehanna River between North Shore Drive and Conklin Avenue. It's located behind the Park Diner, a short distance east of the Exchange Street bridge.
Last Tuesday morning, a man escaped injury after a witness said he intentionally drove a sport utility vehicle into the river near the dam. The man extricated himself from the vehicle after it wound up in the water. Police have not said whether he was charged in connection with the incident.
Minor said detectives are continuing to investigate the death of a woman whose body was found in a raging creek on Binghamton's South Side on June 2. Police identified the woman as 64-year-old Debra Scott of Johnson City.
Scott's body was discovered in Bayless Creek by a man who was walking near his home.
Although that investigation has not been closed, Minor said no information has yet been developed suggesting foul in Scott's death.
People with information relevant to the investigations may contact the Binghamton police detective bureau at (607) 772-7080.
