Broome County sheriff's office investigators are trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of a person whose body was discovered in the Town of Dickinson.

Sheriff's deputies were sent to Downs Avenue around 7:10 a.m. Tuesday.

Detective Sergeant John Harder told WNBF News the call was dispatched as a "check the welfare" matter. He said the person was deceased when the first units arrived at the scene.

The body was located on south side of Downs Avenue, near the Binghamton city line. The scene is about two blocks east of the Johnson City Walmart store.

Downs Avenue was closed between Francis Street and Columbus Street as investigators began to process the scene and to interview people who live nearby.

Harder said the sheriff's office is being assisted by the Binghamton police department.
