The city of Binghamton plans to spend nearly a quarter of a million dollars to demolish two unused pedestrian bridges.

The downtown walkways over State and Water streets were closed several years ago because of safety concerns.

Mayor Richard David said the State Street span that once connected a city-owned parking ramp with the Metrocenter will be removed first.

State Street between Court Street and the garage entrance will be closed to traffic starting Thursday so equipment can be put in place. The street closure is expected to last for about three weeks.

Major demolition work is scheduled to begin Friday.
