The major demolition work is underway at the MacArthur Elementary school that was destroyed in the 2011 flood.

Heavy equipment moved in this week to begin taking down the walls.

The new school is scheduled to open for the 2015 school year.

The new building is being constructed on the site of the old school, but is being elevated five feet above the 500 year flood plain.

The actual construction on the new, state-of-the-art elementary school is due to get underway in January, weather permitting.

Pre-demolition work, including asbestos abatement has been underway for the past several weeks.

The MacArthur students have been spread around three other Binghamton City School District buildings since the school was destroyed in September, 2011.
