Police say a vehicle struck a woman crossing a street on Binghamton's West Side, seriously injuring her before the driver raced away from the scene.

Investigators say 37-year-old Amie Lewis of Binghamton was hospitalized in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Detectives say Lewis was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Main and Murray streets around 9:49 p.m. Friday.

Lewis sustained severe head and internal injuries.

Police say investigators located the suspected driver, 45-year-old Matthew Wood of Greene, Monday morning.

With information provided by the public, detectives also have found the vehicle they believe struck Lewis.

Wood has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with serious physical injury, a felony.

Wood was being held at Binghamton Police Headquarters at City Hall.

Binghamton investigators are being assisted by the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
