A bank notified an elderly Broome County woman of suspicious activity involving her accounts and that resulted in a grand larceny arrest.

Authorities say 69-year-old Theresa O'Connell of Binghamton has been accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the woman while acting as her power of attorney.

Investigators say the town of Fenton woman contacted the Broome County Sheriff's Office, which retained a forensic accountant to determine where the money went.

O'Connell has been charged with two counts of third-degree grand larceny. She allegedly stole $20,000.

The charges were filed with courts in Binghamton and Johnson City. The money was withdrawn in separate $10,000 transactions in each jurisdiction.
