Binghamton Man Charged After West Side Standoff
Authorities say a man who barricaded himself inside a Binghamton apartment building now faces several charges.
27-year-old Keanu Downey was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon following a brief standoff with police on the city's West Side.
Police were sent to 30 Edwards Street after a 911 call reported a man was being held hostage in a first-floor apartment.
When officers arrived, the man who was said to have been held in the building came out and reported Downey was still inside armed with a handgun.
The Metro SWAT team was called to the scene. While efforts were made to evacuate the apartment house, Downey came out of the building and was taken into custody.
Police previously had obtained a search warrant for the apartment. After the standoff, a search turned up a loaded .38 revolver, two high-capacity handgun magazines and ammunition. Investigators also seized drug-related paraphernalia.
Downey has been charged with menacing and four weapon-related counts. He also was wanted in Pennsylvania on two extraditable warrants.
