The City of Binghamton has plans to turn four eyesore properties into affordable housing to combat homelessness in the area.

The City September 28 unveiled the $8.1 million North Side Rehabilitation Project  to renovate 39-40 Munsell Street, 25 Moffatt Avenue, 22 Way Street and 4 Sturgis Street, creating subsidized apartment housing for those in need.

Mayor Richard David points out a lot of attention has been given to the City’s demolition of derelict properties but the goal is not to “just demolish every property we get our hands on.”

The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, Greater Opportunities is supporting the project through grant money and will be overseeing the project, maintaining properties and doing case work for residents.

The apartments in the renovated properties will be reserved for people experiencing homelessness and those residents will be able to stay in their homes even after they have gotten back on their feet, unlike other transitional housing programs.

The state is providing a subsidy so tenants will be charged 40 percent of their income for rent when they can pay.

People who are experiencing homelessness or who need other assistance can call the regional help line at 211 for referral.
