Binghamton Univ. Student Found Dead at Base of Library Tower
Authorities at Binghamton University say the body of a student was discovered outside the 15-story library tower on the Vestal campus.
In a statement, University President Harvey Stenger said police and the Harper's Ferry student ambulance service were sent to the building early Monday morning.
According to the statement, "a student was discovered deceased." The area on the north side of the library tower was sealed off with temporary fencing and plastic sheeting was used to conceal the scene where the body had been found.
Stenger said the police investigation "showed no criminal activity." He said the student's family had been notified.
A statement was posted to the university website shortly before 9 a.m. indicating police were investigating "an incident that occurred outside the Bartle Library Tower." Less than 30 minutes later, an update advised that classes had been cancelled for Monday.
In his message about the student's death, Stenger wrote: "Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends of the student. We are overwhelmed by the tragic nature of their passing."
Stenger encouraged "everyone to support each other, look out for each other and share concerns with campus professionals as appropriate."
