Students soon will be taking Binghamton University courses online because of coronavirus concerns but students will be able to remain on campus.

University President Harvey Stenger issued a statement shortly after Governor Andrew Cuomo's Wednesday afternoon announcement that SUNY campuses would take steps to utilize "distance learning."

Stenger said all classes must go online by March 19. Laboratory classes will be taught remotely, although there may be some exceptions.

Research labs and facilities will remain open. Residence halls, dining halls and other campus facilities and buildings also will be kept open.

Stenger said students will be permitted to stay on campus or they may choose to go home.

The changes are to remain in effect until the end of the spring semester.

Most events scheduled on or after March 19 will be canceled or moved to an online format.

Spectators will not be permitted to attend athletic competitions and performances.

A decision regarding commencement is to be announced by April 17.

University staff should report to work as normal. Employees with health concerns may ask to work remotely.
