Binghamton to Tear Down Abandoned Gas Station

A building that had housed a gas station and car wash on Binghamton's North Side is to be demolished.

The site at 419 Chenango Street has been unused for several years. It's expected to be cleared by the end of the year.

Mayor Richard David described the building as an "embarrassing property."

An abandoned house to the north of the old gas station structure also is to be demolished.

New York state government spent about $76,000 to remove six underground storage tanks and two gas pumps from the property.

The cleared properties would make it possible for the construction of a new entrance to the Binghamton Plaza.

The plaza's existing entrance is a short distance to the south on the other side of the Binghamton Fire Department's Engine Company Number 3.
