Another Binghamton Subway Restaurant Preparing to Close
A restaurant that's been a fixture in downtown Binghamton is about to shut down.
People familiar with the situation say the Subway shop at 35 Court Street is expected to close by the end of this month. The restaurant has operated at that site for the past three decades.
The owner of the franchise did not return calls for comment this week but customers were being told that the restaurant was planning to close on March 28.
The Subway restaurant occupies a storefront of the Court Street building, which was acquired by CB Enterprise LLC of Binghamton for about $1.2 million in December 2021.
The property owner on Friday indicated he expected the restaurant would close but he did not know when that would happen. He said no plans had been developed for a future use of the space that's been occupied by the Subway shop.
In recent weeks, the restaurant has been operating for only 25 hours a week. It's been open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and closed on weekends.
Old World Deli, which had operated on Court Street a few steps away from the Subway restaurant, closed in late March of last year.
Several Subway locations in the Southern Tier have closed over the past few years.
Restaurants on Conklin Avenue in Binghamton and in the University Plaza in Vestal are among the units that have shut down.
The Subway chain has been struggling nationally with more than 1,000 restaurant locations closing across the United States since 2018.
