Flooding wrecked the MacArthur Elementary School on Binghamton's South Side three years ago this week.

Construction on a new school complex is continuing at the Vestal Avenue site of the original school.

Karry Mullins, Binghamton City School District assistant superintendent for administration, says the work is "progressing at a quick pace."

Mullins says cement continues to be poured at the site. Steel for the new school is scheduled to be delivered on September 19.

While the construction is moving forward at an "accelerated schedule," Mullins says many factors will determine exactly when classes can start at the new school.

The district has had a goal of beginning classes at the new MacArthur facility in September of next year. But officials have acknowledged the schedule may need to be adjusted.

Major work on the project was delayed for months while the State Education Department reviewed the plans for the school's operational systems.

MacArthur Elementary students now attend classes at two temporary sites: St. Thomas Aquinas School on Binghamton's West Side and St. Francis of Assisi School in Hillcrest.
