Binghamton School District Responds to Student’s Claims
Binghamton City School District officials say they've reviewed an incident in which a high school student claimed he was assaulted by staff members.
The district Friday afternoon released a statement following a Press & Sun-Bulletin story about a September 11 incident.
The 17-year-old student, who is black, said three white school employees pushed him, slammed him to the pavement and pushed his face into the ground after he used a wrong exit to leave the building.
The newspaper reported two other students heard a school staffer call the boy the N-word.
The school district statement said staff, students and witnesses were interviewed after the incident. It also said video "from several sources and vantage points was reviewed."
The statement did not address specific allegations made by the student. It said the district does not comment on disciplinary proceedings for students or staff because it is not legally permitted to do so.
The statement said "it is important to realize that single images or clips of a video taken out of context do not portray a full story."
The newspaper reported city police responded to the incident but no charges were filed.
