Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin to Be Printed in New Jersey
Binghamton's newspaper, which hasn't been printed locally for the last few years, soon will be produced at an out-of-state facility.
The Press & Sun-Bulletin has been printed near Rochester since June 2018 when Gannett closed its 12-year-old "Central New York Production Facility" in Johnson City.
Gannett now has decided to shut down its Rochester-area printing plant. Workers at the facility in the town of Greece were advised of the move Wednesday.
According to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, 108 people will lose their jobs when the facility closes in April. Nearly 100 people had worked at the $50 million Gannett plant when it was shut down.
The report indicated Gannett's papers in Binghamton and other upstate New York cities would be printed in Rockaway, New Jersey.
The future print site actually is a bit closer to Binghamton than the Rochester facility. An online check suggests the time it would take to truck the papers from the New Jersey plant to Binghamton might be about 15 minutes less than the time needed to travel from the town of Greece.
Gannett and other newspapers around the United States have been consolidating printing operations in the wake of decreasing circulation as more people go online to obtain information.
The Press & Sun-Bulletin stopped printing a Saturday edition last March. The newspaper also has eliminated holiday print editions.
Additional reductions in the print schedule are expected, although no announcements have been made about additional changes.
In an unsigned email to Press & Sun-Bulletin subscribers last week, the newspaper pledged to "continue to bring you the quality journalism you expect — investigative reporting, local sports, breaking news and more."
The message said: "We are invested in this place we call home."
