Binghamton Police Investigate Report of Person Jumping Into River
City police and fire units were sent to the Memorial Bridge in Binghamton after someone reported a person may have jumped into the Chenango River.
Authorities say the call came in at 12:45 p.m. Monday. Police officers initially focused their attention near the southwest corner of the bridge that links Riverside Drive with North Shore Drive.
Police and firefighters searched the water just west of Confluence Park and the riverbank area. Fire units also staged along the Susquehanna River at Front Street.
The fire department was prepared to put boats into the water if necessary. Emergency vehicles, including an ambulance, lined the south side of the bridge for about 30 minutes.
Binghamton police detective Captain Cory Minor said there was no indication that anyone was in the water. The matter remained under investigation.
On April 12, a woman who jumped from the nearby Washington Street pedestrian bridge was pulled from the fast-moving Susquehanna River. She was brought to shore in a fire department boat.
