Binghamton Police are the latest to warn people not to give out information or money to anyone claiming over the phone to be from a police agency trying to scare them into thinking they or a family member is in trouble.

City Police say they have recently gotten information from as far away a Virginia about fraudulent calls.

In a warning the BPD posted on social media, officials say the scam remains the same with the caller saying money is needed to resolve a legal problem of a family member. Many times, threatening language is used.

The City Police Department does not solicit money in regards to legal proceedings over the phone and whenever officers have contact with the public while executing their duties, they will identify themselves as Binghamton Police officers and give their name.

Anyone receiving suspicious calls should contact their local law enforcement agency immediately and never give out bank account or other personal information over the phone or through email.
