The City of Binghamton Police Department is getting $27,158 in federal funds to help fight crime and address the opioid epidemic.

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced over $376 million in grant funding in jurisdictions across the country to help enhance public safety.

Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Katharine Sullivan says the programs being funded support prevention activities and aids in the apprehension and prosecution of perpetrators. 

Grant funding is also earmarked for victim services like the testing of sexual assault kits, wrongful convictions and innovative prosecution strategies.

Some other awards in the Northern District of New York included $100,628 to be divided between the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, $360,000 for the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office and $475,000 for counseling services in Cayuga County.
