Some important decisions are to be made about the Binghamton Plaza property and the businesses that remain at the once-thriving North Side complex.

A hearing is scheduled in State Supreme Court in Broome County next week on issues related to the city's eminent domain case against the owners of the 27-acre site.

Mayor Jared Kraham said attorneys now are discussing the logistics of how the city will ultimately gain control of the parcels along West State Street.

The eminent domain action began more than three years ago. After a court decision in its favor, the city offered the New Jersey-based owners of the Binghamton Plaza about $1.5 million for the property.

Kraham told WNBF News that it will be important for the city's environmental consultants to get access to all areas of the site. Assessments will be needed to develop plans for asbestos remediation and the eventual demolition of the plaza buildings.

The mayor said "all of the major legal hurdles have been overcome." He said the property owners "have agreed initially" to the price, indicating it "could be a starting point for further negotiations."

Kraham said he's "really confident that a relocation plan" can be developed for the plaza businesses that would enable them to remain in the city.

The Supreme Court hearing in the case is to be held in Binghamton next Thursday.

The Binghamton Plaza was built on the site of the old city dump at Stow Flats.

Redevelopment plans for the property will be limited because of the contamination that existed there before the plaza opened in 1963.
