Binghamton Plate Reader Cited in Felony Arrest

A recently-installed Binghamton license plate reader has been credited with the arrest of a teenager and the recovery of a loaded gun in a stolen truck.

Authorities say the vehicle which had been reported stolen in Tennessee triggered an alert at police headquarters when it passed a plate reader at Main Street and Floral Avenue.

A police officer spotted the pickup truck on Main Street shortly after an attempt-to-locate was issued to local agencies around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. Three occupants fled the vehicle after it pulled into a driveway on Park Street.

Virtually all available police units in the city set up a perimeter in the West Side neighborhood. Police apprehended 17-year-old Kenneth Jordan of Endicott. The two other suspects were not found.

Jordan was charged with possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a loaded firearm.

Mayor Richard David on Monday said 15 devices now have been installed at eight locations to capture and log license plate information of vehicles entering Binghamton.

Since August 30, $4,710 in fines have been collected because of plate reader hits.

David said seven more plate readers at five other locations will be installed early next year.
