Binghamton Mayor Orders Immediate Crackdown on Illegal Fireworks

Police in Binghamton have been directed to take action against people who use fireworks in the city.

Mayor Richard David is advising residents that "fireworks are illegal" in the city of Binghamton.

In a statement, David said fireworks are "not just a neighborhood nuisance and drain on police resources - they can cause fires."

The mayor also noted fireworks "are dangerous if handled by children or with children nearby."

Over the past three months, city police have responded to 55 fireworks-related complaints.

David said he's asking Binghamton residents "to be good neighbors and not set off illegal fireworks this weekend."

The mayor has ordered the police Community Response Team "to crack down on illegal fireworks now through the July 4th weekend."
