A driver who ran away when the car he was driving slammed into a utility pole in Johnson City has been arrested.

Authorities say 33-year-old Daniel Klenchik of Binghamton was taken into custody minutes after the crash.

Klenchik raced through the backyards of homes in Johnson City and on Binghamton's West Side in an effort to elude police.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, deputies tried to stop a 2006 Volvo which matched the description of a vehicle sought by state police.

The car, which was traveling east on Route 17, did not pull over. The vehicle continued onto Route 201 and then Riverside Drive at a high rate of speed.

The driver lost control of the car, which crashed into the pole at the intersection of Riverside and Ackley Avenue. NYSEG electric lines were brought down but no power problems were reported.

Klenchik faces several charges including reckless driving, unlawfully fleeing a police officer and operating a vehicle with no insurance. He was issued tickets and then turned over to state police for their investigation.
