Binghamton Ice Cream Shop May Be Demolished Before Opening

A new ice cream parlor in downtown Binghamton may be torn down before it can officially open.

A small brick building at the base of the historic Marconi Tower on Lewis Street has been renovated after sitting unused for several decades. The site is between the Lackawanna Train Station building and NYSEG Stadium.

Developer Mark Yonaty said a lot of work and money has gone into converting the structure into an ice cream shop called Scoopy Dooby. But the way things are going, the place may be demolished before long.

Yonaty said he's encountering trouble with the city regarding the project. He didn't specify who has been responsible for the difficulties but, he said, "I'm to my breaking point."

The developer expressed frustration with City Hall's lack of support for new businesses.

Yonaty said some people have had a chance to sample ice cream from Scoopy Dooby. But, at the moment, he's giving serious consideration to tearing down the building.

Yonaty said he's contacted a construction company to find out how much it would cost to demolish the place.

Deputy Mayor Jared Kraham Tuesday said he had no knowledge of any issues at City Hall that should affect the new business.
