Binghamton residents may notice some water discoloration starting next week as the city starts a round of hydrant flushing and testing.

The city water department checks hydrants in the spring and fall to help ensure water lines are functioning properly.

Binghamton officials say citywide hydrant flushing is scheduled to start next Monday.

The work is to be done Monday through Thursday during the day and at night.

Daytime flushing and testing is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Nighttime hours will be from 7:00 to 11:00. The project will take about four weeks.

Officials say while there will be some water discoloration, the water will be safe for use.

More information about the hydrant flushing program may be obtained by contacting the water department at 607.772.7219.
