Binghamton Garage Demolition Project Moves Closer to Boscov’s
The effort to tear down the old Water Street parking ramp next to Binghamton's Boscov's department store is entering its final stages.
The city-owned garage opened in 1970. Its demolition was ordered because of structural problems, including deteriorating steel beams and crumbling concrete.
The massive project started in late December. Most of the parking facility has been knocked down by crews from Gorick Construction.
The demolition work is about to get more challenging as the south end of the old structure is removed where it's connected with the department store building.
Boscov's senior vice president Jacob Stein in January said the company had been having discussion with the demolition contractor to plan for the work as it moved closer to the store.
At the time, Stein said the goal was to ensure that the project would be "minimally disruptive."
Stein has not been available to provide an update on the effect the next stage of the demolition work may have on store operations.
After the old garage has been removed, the city plans to build a 549-space parking facility to replace it. An apartment complex is to be built above the new garage.
