Home of Binghamton's Eclipse Nightclub to Be Torn Down

A building that housed a series of popular nightspots on Front Street in Binghamton is expected to be demolished.

Members of the city's Commission on Architecture and Urban Design have reviewed a request by the owners of the former Ramada Inn to remove an addition that had been used for nightclubs like Eclipse, Xanadu and Esprit.

The structure targeted for demolition also includes a swimming pool which no longer is in use.

The commission reviews such plans to determine whether there is any historical significance to a structure that is to be torn down. A panel member said no such issues should block the demolition.

The building slated for demolition was an addition constructed in 1972. It has been occupied by restaurants and nightclubs over the years.

The site is located southeast of Binghamton High School and is adjacent to the school's parking facility.

The main three-story building on Front Street opened as Schrafft's Restaurant and Motor Lodge in September 1964. It became a Ramada Inn in October 1971.

In more recent years, the place was a Days Inn and then was known as Travel Hotel and Suites.

The 135-room property was acquired by Classic on Front LLC of Brooklyn in 2016 for about $2.5 million and converted into student housing.

Earlier this year, the place was rebranded "Studio's Sixty-Five." A representative of the business on Wednesday afternoon declined to discuss the planned demolition or what other changes are being considered.
