Dozens of state highway workers from the Southern Tier are working on snow removal operations in western New York.

The state Department of Transportation has sent 25 people from Broome County, along with nine trucks to the Buffalo area to assist crews in dealing with this week's snowfall.

DOT spokesman David Hamburg says another dozen people and five trucks from Tioga County headed to the hard-hit region on Wednesday.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Hamburg said workers and equipment from all across New York were dispatched to help with the daunting snow removal task.

Hamburg said the initial deployment is for five days but that could be extended. Additional DOT resources from the Binghamton area also may be moved to western New York to provide more assistance in the region's efforts to dig out.
