The effort to track down the killer of a 12-year-old Binghamton girl is moving to the streets of her hometown.

City police have said nothing in recent weeks about their investigation into the fatal shooting of Aliza Spencer, a sixth-grade student who was shot in the chest last spring.

Aliza had been walking with her father and brother near the family's East Side home when she was wounded around 10 p.m. April 21.

Since her death, signs calling for "Justice for Aliza" have been posted on Bigelow Street and other streets in the neighborhood.

More than $1,400 was raised in an online campaign to pay for billboards "to raise community awareness of the case."

The woman who organized the effort wrote that she is a friend of the Spencer family and had received their permission to launch the campaign.

The amount donated exceed the goal for the effort, so the organizer said she also has purchased some yard signs, magnets and bracelets with the "Justice for Aliza" message.

The first two billboards paid for by the fundraising effort have been posted on Henry Street downtown. A larger billboard is scheduled to go up on Court Street later this month.

The signs ask the question: "What happened to Aliza Spencer?" They feature a photo of the girl and the phone number for the Binghamton police detective division.

The billboards also note a $29,500 reward has been posted for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
