Binghamton Baseball Drought: One Year Since Rumble Ponies Played
There is no joy in Binghamton for baseball fans who now have gone a full year without seeing their Rumble Ponies in action.
The last game for the Eastern League team was played last Labor Day - September 2, 2019. Binghamton closed the season with a win over the Hartford Yard Goats, 4 to 3.
366 days later, the question persists: Was that the final contest for the Rumble Ponies?
Binghamton baseball fans had looked forward to the 2020 season starting in April but the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the entire minor schedule.
The future of the Rumble Ponies was in doubt even before the scheduled start of the season after news broke last winter that up to 42 minor league teams across the nation might be eliminated.
Most people familiar with the situation say prospects of retaining a Double-A Eastern League team in Binghamton aren't good. But some have indicated they expect something will happen to ensure that some baseball will be played downtown next year. But the home team may not be the Rumble Ponies.
