Binghamton Area Unemployment Numbers Best in 18 Years

Numbers from the New York State Department of Labor show an improvement in the employment situation for the Greater Binghamton Job Market over the last year.

The four-point-nine percent unemployment rate is.9% less than March of 2018.  Binghamton gained 200 non-farm jobs. Elmira showed zero change in job numbers while Ithaca gained 1,200 non-farm jobs for the year.  No metro area posted a job loss for the year.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar Tweeted “Great job news for Broome County today!”  The Democrat says the county now has the lowest amount of people unemployed in 18 years.  The executive acknowledged more work needs to be done but said the latest numbers showed “great progress!”

The Labor Department says state-wide numbers also showed improvement.  New York had a new, all-time high in private sector jobs at 8,274,100, a 0.2% increase. But the state-wide unemployment rate in March inched up from 3.9" to 4.0%.

Educational and Health Services opportunities led the way for job growth followed by construction and professional & business services.

The national unemployment rate for March came in at three-point-nine percent.
