New Affordable Apartment Buildings Set to Open in Binghamton
Construction has been completed on a pair of apartment buildings in a Binghamton neighborhood.
The $3.3 million project has been developed by Greater Opportunities Incorporated.
The new buildings are located on Munsell Street on Binghamton's North Side. One has six one-bedroom apartments and the other has six two-bedroom units.
The recently-completed structures are near an existing 18-unit apartment building that had been abandoned. That old structure, which was renovated by Greater Opportunities, was reoccupied in 2023.
The first residents of the newly-constructed buildings are expected to move in next month.
Kelly Robertson, Greater Opportunities chief operating officer, said six of the new apartments are reserved for people 62 years of age and older. The remaining six units are designated for people with up to 80 percent of the area's median income.
Residents for nine of the twelve apartments have been selected. But applications are still being accepted for a waiting list. Applications are available at the Greater Opportunities website.
Most of the funding for the apartment construction project - $2.5 million - was provided by the city of Binghamton from its federal ARPA fund allocation. The remaining $789,000 came from the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal.
Construction of the Munsell Street buildings took about 12 months to complete.
