The Big Cleanup: Utility, Tree Crews Deployed Across Binghamton
Some homes and businesses in the Binghamton area may be without electric service for a couple of days.
More than 100,000 NYSEG customers in upstate New York were without power at one point following the heavy wet snow that fell late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
The utility is urging people to stay away from storm debris because downed wires or damaged electrical equipment may be hidden by snow.
Downed power lines and outages may be reported to NYSEG by calling (800) 572-1131.
People should assume that any wire is energized, which could cause serious injury or death.
Utility crews are assessing damage and taking care of downed lines. Other crews are working to remove downed trees and limbs to clear the way for repairs needed to restore power.
As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, NYSEG reported 42,121 customers in Broome County and 7,752 in Tioga County were without power.
About 150 line crews and more than 100 tree crews had fanned out around the Binghamton area to deal with the aftermath of the powerful spring snowstorm.
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said the village of Deposit was experiencing a widespread power and telephone outage. He said people who are unable to call 911 should report an emergency in person at the Deposit Fire Station. A curfew will be in place in the village from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Trees and limbs came down on many streets in Binghamton's West Side neighborhoods. Public works employees with chainsaws and other equipment to handle dozens of calls throughout the city.
