Veteran Binghamton Broadcast Journalist Bernard Fionte Dies at 90

Bernard Fionte, who guided several Binghamton television and radio newsrooms for decades, has died. He was 90.

Fionte, who was a former resident of Binghamton and Whitney Point, lived at the New York State Veterans' Home in Oxford in recent years. His wife, Sally, said he "passed away very peacefully."

Fionte was born in Massachusetts. He was named news director of WNBF-TV Channel 12 (now WBNG) in Binghamton in 1968 anchoring "Communications Centre 12" and "Action News."

Fionte later worked as news director at WMGC-TV Channel 34 (now WIVT) and at WICZ-TV (Channel 40). He also served as news director for WNBF Radio and WKOP Radio.

Fionte's fellow broadcasters in Binghamton presented him their "Living Legend" award in 2005.

Private services are planned. A memorial event may be held at a later date.

The top five boy names and top five girl names are listed for each state, as well as the number of babies born in 2018 with that name. Historically common names like Michael only made the top five in three states, while the less common name Harper ranks in the top five for 22 states.
