New York State Police say, in the first crash, a driver of a pickup truck was injured when the GMC was hit by a Kia Optima at around 9:30 a.m. near mile marker ten between exits two and three. The truck left the road and overturned.

The pickup driver, whose name has not been released, was transported to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center with what Troopers described as serious injuries.  The driver of the Kia was not hurt.

The left lane of I81 was closed down while authorities worked on the initial investigation.

Meanwhile, another crash happened about an hour later just north of the scene of the first collision. A tractor trailer was approaching the first incident and jackknifed across the lanes. That closed the highway at exit three for hours unto the early afternoon as equipment was brought in to remove the tractor trailer.

Both of those crashes are under investigation.
