Astroturf Crews Cope with Oppressive Heat on Rec Park Tennis Job
Workers are putting the finishing touches on the tennis complex being constructed at Recreation Park on Binghamton's West Side.
The crews from a Syracuse-based unit of Astroturf Corporation were applying acrylic paint to the surface of the new tennis courts. They encountered a heat index approaching 100 degrees as they worked on Monday afternoon.
Another coat of acrylic paint was to be applied before the start of coloring and court markings.
The work on the surface of the courts is expected to be completed in a couple of weeks.
The tennis complex will be named in memory of 16-year-old Harper Stantz. The Binghamton High School student had played tennis with a friend at the park in March 2019, shortly before she was struck by a vehicle while walking home. She died as a result of her injuries.
