Architectural Firm Preserves Historic Binghamton Mansion

A landmark structure on Binghamton's West Side that was in danger of being turned into student housing has been renovated for offices by a city business.

Chianis + Anderson Architects has settled into the Davidge Mansion at 31 Front Street. The company's offices had been in downtown Binghamton for nearly two decades.

The historic building - which was constructed in 1903 - was acquired for $680,000 last December. It had been previously used as the headquarters for SaveAround. A developer's proposal to convert the place into a 34-bedroom apartment complex were thwarted by project opponents.

Greg Chianis said the architectural firm had been looking for a new location and had acquired property in Endicott. But when the business partners toured the Davidge Mansion, the plans changed. He said "it was kind of love at first sight."

Renovations to the building and an addition took several months to complete.

Chianis said the firm now employs about two dozen people. He said additional space is available in the complex that will be available to be leased for professional offices.
