The Broome County District Attorney’s office says Schrauger pleaded guilty to the felony of failure to register.

Authorities say the man had been living for several months at the end of 2021 in the City of Binghamton without notifying local law enforcement officials as required under the New York State Corrections Law.

The D.A.’s office says Schrauger was convicted in Broome County in 1996 of Sexual Abuse in the Second Degree for having sexual contact with a person under the age of 14.

District Attorney Michael Korchak issued a statement September 8 saying: “The citizens of Broome County are entitled to know if sex offenders reside in their neighborhood in order to protect their families. Requiring offenders to inform law enforcement of their whereabouts is an important part of the notification process. Defendant Schrauger violated this process and now he will serve prison time.”

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office investigated and filed the charges in the case. Senior Assistant District Attorney Alyssa S. Congdon, of the Special Victims Bureau, prosecuted the case for the District Attorney’s Office.

Several other cases reported by law enforcement recently also involve convicted sex offenders failing to report a change of address but other cases have involved offenders who have not notified authorities of social media or other online accounts they have opened or maintain.
