All SUNY Oneonta Students Sent Home As COVID-19 Spreads

With hundreds of students testing positive for the coronavirus, SUNY Oneonta is scrapping all in-person classes.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the campus community had soared to nearly 400 by Thursday.

School president Barbara Jean Morris said the college needs to send students home "to contain the virus and prevent further community spread."

All SUNY Oneonta classes scheduled for Friday have been canceled to give students time to prepare to move out.

Morris said 389 confirmed coronavirus cases have been confirmed since August 24, when the fall semester began.

Students who wish to remain on the campus will be able to seek permission to do so.

In a statement, Morris said she knows "the vast majority of our students have been diligent in protecting our campus since day one."

Several Oneonta students have been suspended for holding parties in violation of the college's policies.
