AK-47 Assault Rifle Seized in Binghamton Gunfire Investigation

Binghamton police confiscated an assault rifle and two loaded magazine following a shots-fired call.

Authorities said 35-year-old Thomas Lewis of Binghamton was charged with four counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Police were called to 5 Sturges Street shortly after 12:30 p.m. for a report of gunfire. The house was searched but officers did not find any evidence of a recent shooting.

Several people - including Lewis - were detained for questioning. Investigators said he was a "person of interest" in connection with a weapon complaint that occurred at 3 Sturges Street on Wednesday evening.

Police searched that house and found an AK-47 assault rifle and two loaded magazines.

People who live on Sturges Street have complained about ongoing problems involving guns and drugs in their neighborhood.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the chest at 5 Sturges Street on the afternoon of February 25.

Police tracked down the shooting suspect - 28-year-old Christopher Frederick of Binghamton - several weeks later on North McKinley Avenue in the town of Union. He was charged with attempted murder, weapon possession and criminal use of a firearm.

Binghamton officials have not indicated whether the Lockdown Law could be used to address the criminal activity in the Sturges Street neighborhood.
