Addiction prevention programs are returning to some area schools at the end of the year.

The Binghamton, Maine-Endwell, Chenango Forks, Deposit and Broome-Tioga BOCES schools will be getting addiction prevention counselors for students starting December 1.

Each district will also have eight prevention education seminars to teach children about the dangers of abuse.

State and education officials say early intervention is the first step in preventing addiction, crime and potentially death.

Officials say while the program is aimed at early intervention, addiction can actually begin as early as elementary school.
