The number of people in New York state with confirmed cases of COVID-19 has doubled.

Governor Andrew Cuomo Thursday afternoon announced there now are 22 coronavirus patients being treated in the state. That compares to 11 confirmed cases Wednesday.

Speaking at a news briefing, Cuomo said "the more people you test, the more positives you are going to find."

Despite the increasing number of patients, the governor said the "facts do not merit the level of anxiety we are seeing."

Cuomo said eight of the cases are linked to a New Rochelle man who has been hospitalized in New York City.

The governor said special precautions are needed for those in nursing homes and people with compromised immune systems.

Cuomo said between 100 and 200 coronavirus tests now are being performed daily.
