According to state police, the boy was arrested after Marathon High School was evacuated on Monday morning.

Investigators say troopers were called to the school on East Main Street in Marathon around 9:30 a.m. for a reported bomb threat.

Police say students and teachers were out of the school building before troopers arrived.

The suspect allegedly told another student that he had a bomb in his backpack, which was on school property.

The state police bomb disposal unit and a trained dog checked the backpack and the school for an explosive device. No devices were found in the search.

The student was charged with first-degree falsely reporting an incident. He was issued an appearance ticket for Cortland County Family Court.

Police say the boy was released to his parents.
