May is Women's Health Month. The local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up marks the event as Susan Moranda of the American Cancer Society speaks on the May 11th program about some of the cancer issues that are specific to women.

Moranda says obesity, nutrition and exercise can directly impact a woman's chances of getting various forms of cancer.

Moranda also discussed programs and service offered by the cancer society, including 24-hour support services available via a toll-free phone number. The Cancer Society can be reached at 1-800-227-2345 and at their website www.cancer.org.

Moranda says it's important for women to get their regular cancer screenings and if they smoke, they should try to quit. New York State is offering assistance for people who want to quit smoking. That help is available at the N.Y. Quit Line at 1-866-697-8487.

Southern Tier Close Up airs Saturday afternoons at 12:10 on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
