A 75-year-old woman died following a two-vehicle collision in Delaware County.

Authorities say the head-on crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday on Route 28 in the town of Middletown.

According to state police, Harriet Rauchut of Shandaken was pronounced dead at Margaretville Memorial Hospital less than an hour after the collision.

Investigators say a pickup truck crossed into the opposite lane and slammed into the car Rauchut was driving.

Police say the truck driver, 46-year-old Richard Herrel of Delhi, said he had tried to avoid an object in the roadway.

Herrel was treated at the Margaretville hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.
