A Johnson City woman has been arrested after an 88-year-old man was assaulted with a knife in his home on Binghamton's West Side.

Authorities say 54-year-old Valerie Fleming-Spencer of Farr Avenue was charged with first-degree burglary in the incident.

Police say Fleming-Spencer is accused of entering a Cleveland Avenue residence through an unlocked door around 5 a.m. August 7.

The woman is suspected of attacking the man with a kitchen-type knife. The man fought off his attacker and the knife was recovered at the scene.

The man sustained injuries to his hand and face. An investigator said he declined medical treatment.

A detective said Fleming-Spencer showed up at the Binghamton police station Tuesday after she had heard police wanted to question her in connection with the incident.
