Binghamton lawyer Paul Battisti is one of two Republicans to announce they are running for Broome County District Attorney.

The 39-year-old Battisti was the first prospective candidate to publicly express his interest in the post after incumbent Republican Stephen Cornwell revealed he would not seek a second four-year term.

Battisti has focused on criminal defense work in his private law practice. He said he has handled thousands of cases during his 14 years as an attorney.

In launching his campaign, Battisti said the crime activity in Broome County suggests to him that "something is not working right" with the way the district attorney's office is being run.

Battisti is challenging chief assistant district attorney Michael Korchak for the Republican nomination. The primary election is to be held June 25.
