At 10:40 p.m. February 7, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation temporarily reduced the speed limit on Interstate 81 in Susquehanna County to 45 miles per hour until further notice.  The Broome County Sheriff issued a “No Unnecessary Travel Advisory” in the afternoon that was expected to be lifted February 8.

Several schools in New York and Pennsylvania announced delayed openings for February 8.

Still, motorists are encouraged to limit travel if possible and allow extra time to get where they are going and plenty of space between vehicles.

Sheriff Harder added that people should use extra caution clearing the snow from their homes as well.  Shovelers are encouraged to take frequent breaks to avoid over-stress or possible heart attack, lift shovelfuls of snow using the knees and not the back to avoid injury and never reach into a running snow blower to clear a clog.

Both the City of Binghamton and Village of Johnson City continue to ask residents to keep vehicles off the street if possible and remember the alternate side of the street winter parking rules are being strictly enforced.  Johnson City’s municipal parking lots are free all day February 8 to help keep the roads clear.

All residents are reminded it is illegal to blow or shovel snow into the road or to drive with snow-covered vehicles.  Both violations carry the possibility of fines.
