Bitterly cold temperatures are replacing the snow as the main winter weather attraction for the Twin Tiers.

The National Weather Service had issued a Wind Chill Advisory in effect through 10 a.m. February 6 for the entire region.

Wind chills could reach as low as -20 at higher elevations that are getting stronger winds.

The wind chill was expected to be cold enough to cause frost bite in 30 minutes or less.

Residents are reminded to use common sense, limit time outside and make sure all skin is covered.

Animals can also experience frost bite.  Pets should be kept inside and their trips outdoors should also be limited.

Fire officials are urging caution during the winter weather for residents using space heaters, wood stoves, fire places and other alternate heating sources.

There have been two fires destroying mobile homes in Broome County over the past several days and one is blamed on a wood stove malfunction.

The cause of a February 4 fire on Barker Road in the Town of Barker has not been determined and fire investigators say it will never be determined.

That blaze fully engulfed the home by the time firefighters got on the scene.

There were no injuries.

In the other fire, the woodstove at a residence on Trim Street in West Windsor is blamed for starting a blaze at around 7:30 a.m. February 5 that destroyed the mobile home.

A resident was asleep when the fire broke out and smelled the smoke.  He safely made it out of his home.
