WHY Did The Turtle Cross The Road In Owego?

Dr. James Raftis Jr. photo

The “Turtles Crossing” warning signs on State Route 17C in the village of Owego have been in place for several weeks.

In May, WNBF News reported the signs had returned to alert drivers to the possibility of crossing turtles. Since then, no reports had been received in the newsroom about turtle sightings along that section of Fifth Avenue. Now, we have evidence there’s at least one turtle on the move, braving traffic near the village line The turtle was crossing from the north side of Route 17C toward the Riverview Manor Health Center, on its way to the nearby Susquehanna River.
